In 2010 Veria’s Public Library received the “Access to Knowledge” award of
$1 million for its innovation actions and its overall contribution as a library to society,
from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Part of the prize was used for the renovation of the second floor and the attic of the library building
after a closed architectural competition.
The work included the radical renovation and reuse of the premises to serve the needs
of the Library and the public.
After the completion of the architectural, static, mechanical and other studies,
a closed invitation to tender was announced to select the contractor manufacturer.
According to the plans, the second floor and its mezzanine include a foyer – public gathering space, office spaces for library staff and a multi-purpose room equipped with state-of-the-art audio, video and lighting technologies.

The foyer, through folding partitions, can be integrated with the multi-purpose space in order to host all kinds of events (musical, theatrical, lectures, film screenings, etc.) with a capacity up to 90 people.
Particular emphasis was placed on acoustic and visual comfort.
At the same time, the Library proceeded to purchase a piano for the musical needs of the events.
